We had the rare opportunity to interview the exalted designer Simone Mantovani who was recently announced as the Designer of the Day by the A' Design Award and Competition. Simone Mantovani, could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Simone Mantovani: Always passionated for architecture, I started working very young, even before I got my architecture graduation, at my family’s construction business.

Simone Mantovani, can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Simone Mantovani: In 2001, I started up my own studio, Simone Mantovani Arquitetura, integrating my background experiences on commercial, residential and institutional architecture with interior design. That is the way we work, aiming to find complete answers for the projects and the clients desires and needs.

Simone Mantovani, what is "design" for you?
Simone Mantovani: The expression of the creative intuition of the designer in a functional physical form, bringing value and harmony to our day to day.
Simone Mantovani, what kinds of works do you like designing most?
Simone Mantovani: Mostly residences.

Simone Mantovani, what is your most favourite design, could you please tell more about it?
Simone Mantovani: My favourite design is the Baroneza Residence, last year silver award winner, with its seven meters high ceiling, glass walled living room with little number of walls, wide spaces, transparencies and a great variety of textures.

Simone Mantovani, what was the first thing you designed for a company?
Simone Mantovani: I designed a country house with garden at the rooftop.
Simone Mantovani, what is your favourite material / platform / technology?
Simone Mantovani: I work with a great variety of materials, specially wood, metal, concrete and natural stones.

Simone Mantovani, when do you feel the most creative?
Simone Mantovani: When I have freedom to create.

Simone Mantovani, which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Simone Mantovani: How to translate functionality into form.
Simone Mantovani, what kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Simone Mantovani: I get very focused when I'm designing, as if the time doesn't exist.

Simone Mantovani: I really feel complete.

Simone Mantovani: Determination, concentration, knowledge and creativity.

Simone Mantovani, when judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Simone Mantovani: If the purpose was fulfilled.
Simone Mantovani, from your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Simone Mantovani: Our responsibilities are many. We deal with the people’s lives and for that, respect is fundamental.

Simone Mantovani, how do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Simone Mantovani: Design is in everything nowadays and it will be more and more.
Simone Mantovani, when was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Simone Mantovani: My last exhibition was at Como, at A Design Award.

Simone Mantovani: People, materials, technology.
Simone Mantovani, how would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Simone Mantovani: I like to think that I’m a minimalist. I love this idea in life in general.

Simone Mantovani, where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Simone Mantovani: I live in Brazil. Yes, my country affects my way of thinking and living. We have good influencial architects, that’s a good aspect.
Simone Mantovani, how do you work with companies?
Simone Mantovani: I mostly work to my own clients.

Simone Mantovani: Consider the expertize of the designer.

Simone Mantovani: At first, I consider the clients briefing, and start the process adapting their desire into shapes.

Simone Mantovani: Be free, be focused, restless.

Simone Mantovani: Mostly all positive.
