City of Gdansk

City of Gdansk

Gdansk is a Polish city on the Baltic coast, the capital of Amber, Poland's principal seaport and the center of the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.

As a quick summary, Gdańsk is the historical capital of Gdańsk Pomerania and the largest city of Kashubia. The city is famous for Amber design and is visited mainly by German Tourists. Main dishes are the patato dumplings and the most interesting area to visit is the old town area. We have visited the city to join the third edition of the About Design Expo which took place at AmberExpo.
City of Gdansk
For tourists, the most interesting part of Gdansk would be the old town, which has a unique architecture and features several landmarks such as the statute of Neptune. Also in the old town of Gdansk, you can find many restaurants which serve both local Polish food and the international cuisine. The town is usually crowded with tourists from European cities.
City of Gdansk
The old town features a very traditional architecture that is perhaps also was inspired from Danish style. There are many gift shops available throughout the city where you could buy the miniature versions of the houses and of course Amber. Gdansk is also known as the Amber capital of the world, and Gdansk is a good place to buy jewelry designs with amber.
City of Gdansk
The old town is situated near the canals which feature restaurants, but most importantly ice cream parlors, and allows tourists to enjoy a sunny walk. The architecture near the canal is slightly different from the one you would observe in the center of old town, most buildings are made in red bricks, and a lot of museums are within a walking distance.
City of Gdansk
There are several bridges which connects the town, since the area is more or less closed to car traffic, walking is always fun and a happy thing to do. There are many cafe around where you could stop by for a rest and of course, amber shops are also very common. You will need to have some Zloty with you to enjoy it most.

Within the canals, is the canal tour with a kind of a old ship resembling that of Pirates. The tour takes around 15 minutes and is good for some fun photography. Indeed, Gdansk was a major trading point in the old times, and featured one of the largest ports in the world. Polish people refer to the color of Baltic sea as Steel color.
City of Gdansk
The Archaeological Museum of Gdansk is located right next to the canal in the old town area. It has its own unique red-brick architecture, but more importantly features many artifacts that are brought from different places of the world. The interesting aspect is that it features an observatory tower which is accessible with an admission ticket.
City of Gdansk
If you climb the tower (there are about 250 steps!), than you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of Gdansk, and a perfect opportunity to get some fresh air during summer (since it is a bit windy there) and also to enjoy a 360 degree view. From the tower of the archaeological museum of Gdansk, you could take photo of the old mill as well.
City of Gdansk
The maritime museum is also visible from the tower, as well as all the bridges and connections, and the wide area. By going time to tower, you could have a very good understanding of the city layout, and plan your next route in Gdansk. Since the canals are connected to the Baltic sea, you could also occasionally see larger ships.
City of Gdansk
For people outside Poland, Gdansk presents itself as a unique place to take pictures with its arctype architecture. Here in this building, observe three buildings with 3 traditional Gdansk styles; the red bricks, the wood on white, ad painted. While in old city, you might not see often but in Gdansk, you will see that very large pictures as tall as twenty meters could be printed on walls of tall buildings.
City of Gdansk
If you go down the tower, you will be walking among the canals which as I said is highly pleasant. Furthermore, on the bottom of the Archaeological Museum of Gdansk, there is a nice gift shop to bring back gifts to the dear ones. The taxi fares are relatively cheap thus you do not need to stay at old-town to enjoy its beauties.
City of Gdansk
The old crane i.e. the black building as seen in this photo has been restored several times, and at a point of time, it was the largest and strongest crane in the world. It was operated by man-power and could lift up to several tons. The crane existed because Gdansk was a major port city in the Baltic region. The crane is also one of landmarks of the city.
City of Gdansk
One thing I realized that Polish people really like sweet stuff. In this shop at Gdansk old town, you can enjoy a wide selection of lollipops and sweet-bars. Very close to this shop, there is also a producer of these lollipops, and you could buy and try different snacks to start the day energetic and with a sweet smile, in any case there are discount dentists available throughout the city.
City of Gdansk
One of the local foods is the dumplings, in this picture I tried the one with patato and cheese, but many different varieties are available. If you wish to remember and taste the local food, I suggest that you try the dumplings first. Ask a waiter in the old town for their local food suggestions to have a gastronomical satisfaction!
City of Gdansk
The city of Gdansk has many names since it was a widely popular port town. It is called Danzig, Gduńsk, Kdanzk, Gdanzc, Danceke, Gdansk, Danzc, Danczk and Danczik throughout the years and the real name would be The Royal Polish City of Gdańsk. No matte what, the gift industry remained popular throughout the years since you would see from the ceramic cup.
City of Gdansk
Near Gdansk, is Sopot the nightlife capital of Poland. The name is thought to derive from an old Slavic word sopot meaning stream or spring. Sopot is a very touristic place and its central town features many restaurants, bars and night-clubs to enjoy, plus amber shops, gift parlors, ice-cream and wafer places all around.
City of Gdansk
Sopot has an architecture style of its own, mostly inspired by German architecture of the same era. There is one very long street which goes down to the pier. This street also features the crooked house i.e. the Krzywy Domek which is an irregularly-shaped building and functions as a shopping center with many shops (designed by Szotyńscy & Zaleski).
City of Gdansk
This is the area near the pier, where you will find countless amber shops and gift shops, all very small, but you could find the perfect amber gifts here. Also around are places to sit and perhaps enjoy an ice-cream. (It was rather cloudy when we went there, but when the weather is good, I believe it is a much more fun place to be)
City of Gdansk
This is the view of sopot from the Baltic sea. The shore is rather large and is ideal for sunbathing but as locals told me, not many people prefer to swim since the sea is rather cold. If you wish to enjoy the view of Baltic sea, the white cafe is a perfect place to enjoy a cup of cafe, or some local Polish drinks if you wish.
City of Gdansk
In this picture see the pier of Sopot which is the longest wooden pier in Europe, 450 metres from the edge of the shore, 650 m total and access is subject to a ticket. Also see how the swans enjoy their time in Sopot; since it is not the tourist season yet, they are freeriding the empty beach.
